On Saturday, July 17 2010, the 40th International Swimming Crossing of Toroneos gulf took place, organized by the Cultural Youth Association of Nikiti "Sithon" together with the Municipality of Sithonia.
Giannis Giannoulis was the swimmer who arrived first on Nikiti beach a little after 3:00 p.m. having swum the 26 km. between Kassandra and Sithonia peninsulas. He was awarded the winning cup and he was crowned with a laurel wreath, as well as with the... champagne his friends poured on his head. Every swimmer that arrived on Nikiti beach before sunset, or was at least 1 km. away from the beach was crowned with a laurel wreath.
The swimming crossing started in July 1971 as a joke among a group of 6 young people from Nikiti that decided to cross the Toroneos gulf swimming from Nikiti to Kallithea in Kassandra, something that nobody until that time had dared do. This was the 1st Swimming Crossing of Toroneos, which was established ever since, especially since in 1973 this same group of young people founded the Cultural Youth Association of Nikiti "Sithon". The pinacle of the Crossing's success was its internationalization by the participation of foreign swimmers.
